It’s week 7 of the One Room Challenge, and we’re making up for lost time!
It’s week 7 of the One Room Challenge and we are gearing up for the home stretch and busily playing catch up. Well, what happened to weeks 5 and 6 you may wonder? Life. Life happened to those weeks, specifically a bout of rainy weather followed by family events. Luckily the hubs took a little vacation time, allowing us to wrap things up around here.
We previously left off with the deck boards installed and the decision to move forward with building our own railings because we were unable to salvage those. Now we’re moving on to the deck posts, which I thought would be fairly straightforward, but as usual also proved to be a tad difficult. That’s what happens when you keep your existing framework I suppose.
The Pylex Fixplak Decking Post System
In my quest to find sturdy and attractive anchors for the deck posts I stumbled upon these. Both the base plate as well as the collar screw on to both the post and the deck boards, ensuring a strong installation.
We initially had a bit of trouble sliding the base collar onto the posts due to the fact that they weren’t quite dried out yet, but after some time in the sun we were able to work them on without having to plane the posts. We also ran into some issues with leveling, again due to the fact that the original framework had a slight slope to it for runoff. The hubs came up with the idea of using some metal washers under the base plate and they worked out wonderfully.
We did have to add a bit of blocking with 2×4’s around the rim joists in order to install the base plates and collars, but that was one of the easier tasks to complete.
For the railings we used 2×4’s and these rail connector brackets from DeckoRail. I loved how easy these were to install and I think they look so much better than simply screwing the rails to the posts as was previously done.
I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I think it might be safe to say we’ll be ready for the reveal next week! As always, thanks for stopping by and don’t forget to see how the other guest participants are doing over on the One Room Challenge blog! See you next week!
