Well, week 3 of the One Room Challenge has arrived and we’ve got the deck boards down, but that’s about it. The added cost of having to purchase new boards rather than flip and reuse the old ones had us rethinking our original plan, which you can read about here.

We decided to scrap building the simple pergola, which was basically just going to be four 8′ posts and an attached frame , and instead will be using two full length 4×4′ posts on the far corner ends of the deck in order to attach some pad eyes that would enable us to hook our sunshade to. The other ends will attach to the side of the house above the French doors, which I was really hesitant to do, but the hardware is small and hopefully won’t stand out too much.
So far I would say the easiest and least time consuming part of this process has been screwing down the new boards. After the first few boards were down we started lining up a few at a time and went joist to joist driving the screws in all the boards in a row moving down to the next joist and so on.
In other news, I scored this great outdoor sectional on Marketplace. Prior to the events of last year I had been planning on building one out of 2×4’s and just purchasing the cushions separately for it. Finding this as it was and not having to now spend double or more what I would originally have by building it was a huge relief. The price was so reasonable because it didn’t have any cushions, which I had already been lucky enough to find on clearance last summer season. It was a win win for us, and I’m so excited to see how it all comes together in the next several weeks.
I’ve been procrastinating on starting the railings, which I have got to get stripped and repainted next week. The reveal will be here before you know it. I already have my supplies so there’s nothing standing in my way but me.
Thank you for taking the time to stop by and see what we’re up to! You can see what all of the other participants are up to this week over on the One Room Challenge blog. See you next week!
